Lying down, not standing in front of something

A red light therapy bed looks like a tanning bed and works nothing like one. A tanning bed emits ultraviolet light to darken skin. A red light bed emits red and near infrared light, no UV at all, and nothing about the session tans you.

You lie down, the canopy closes, and every surface of your body is covered at the same time. Fifteen minutes later you are back in your car.

The alternative most places offer is a panel. You stand in front of it and angle yourself toward whatever you care about most. Panels are genuinely good, and some of them are very good. The difference is coverage per session, not quality of light. A bed treats your whole body in one go. With a panel you either reposition several times or accept that the session reached your front and not your back.

For one stubborn shoulder, a panel is fine. For skin, recovery or general wellness across your whole body, a bed does it in one lie down.

Should you just buy one instead?

A fair number of people searching for a red light therapy bed near them are actually weighing up buying one, so here is the honest comparison.

A quality full body red light bed is a five figure purchase. Consumer units at the cheap end exist, and the usual problem is output. Irradiance falls away quickly with distance, so a unit with impressive looking specs on paper can deliver very little at the distance you actually lie at. It is the most common way people end up disappointed by home equipment.

If you are going to use a bed several times a week for years, ownership can make sense. If you want to find out whether red light does anything for you before committing, or you want the output of commercial equipment without the capital, paying per session is the sensible route. Our unlimited membership tier exists for exactly the people who would otherwise be shopping for a bed.

Try it here first. If you then buy one, at least you will know what you are comparing against.

What the light is doing

Inside your cells sit mitochondria, and inside those sits an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase. It absorbs light in two bands, red at roughly 630 to 660 nanometers and near infrared at roughly 810 to 850 nanometers. When it does, the electron transport chain runs more efficiently and the cell produces more ATP, the fuel every repair process draws on.

How red light reaches your cells
Two wavelength bands, two depths, one mitochondrial target
Red 630–660nmNear infrared 810–850nm

Subcutaneous tissue
Muscle and joint

Inside the cell

Cytochrome c oxidase absorbs both bands and the electron transport chain runs more efficiently.

More ATP for cellular repair

Mechanism per Hamblin, Harvard Medical School, 2017 review.

Red light stays shallower and does most of its work in skin, superficial tissue and hair follicles, where the evidence for collagen and wound healing is strongest. Near infrared travels further into muscle and joint. A bed delivers both across your whole body at once.

One thing worth knowing before you assume longer is better: the dose response is biphasic. Added exposure yields zero gains beyond the peak. What matters is the combination of wavelength, output and distance, not minutes on a clock.

Why a longer session is not a better one
Light therapy has a biphasic dose response. Too little does nothing. Past the peak, more exposure stops adding benefit.

Added exposure yields zero gains beyond the peak. The dose is set by wavelength, output and distance, not minutes on a clock.

The regulatory part, stated plainly

Red light therapy devices are FDA cleared, not FDA approved. Those are different standards.

Clearance means a device was reviewed as substantially equivalent to something already on the market, for a specific stated use such as temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain or reduction of fine lines. Approval is reserved for high risk Class III devices such as pacemakers, and no LED light therapy device holds it.

If a studio near you advertises an FDA approved red light bed, they are either mistaken or counting on you not checking.

This is a wellness service. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or replace medical care.

Who we cannot see

No one pregnant. No one under 18. Neither is negotiable.

Red light therapy may also be unsuitable if you have retinal or serious eye conditions, photosensitivity disorders, epilepsy or seizure disorders, active cancer or ongoing cancer treatment, fever or active infection, open wounds or skin infections, certain thyroid conditions, recent surgery, or severe claustrophobia.

Some medications raise light sensitivity, including certain antibiotics, retinoids and acne medications, lithium, phenothiazines and certain chemotherapy agents. Speak to your provider first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a red light therapy bed session cost near Bethlehem, PA?

At Bee Well Vitality a fifteen minute full body red light bed session starts at $45. Memberships start at $149 a month and include four sessions, and the top tier at $449 a month is unlimited. Seniors, veterans and first responders receive 10% off with code CARE10.

How much does it cost to buy a red light therapy bed?

A quality full body unit is a five figure purchase. Cheaper consumer units exist, but output is the common problem, because irradiance drops off sharply with distance and a unit that looks strong on paper can deliver very little at the distance you actually lie at. Paying per session is usually the better route until you know red light works for you.

Is a red light therapy bed better than panels?

For whole body goals, a bed covers more in one session. It reaches your front, sides and back at once, where a panel reaches whichever surface you point it at, so full coverage means repositioning or accepting a partial session. For a single targeted area a good panel is perfectly adequate. The difference is coverage per session, not the quality of the light.

Is a red light therapy bed the same as a tanning bed?

No. They look similar and do opposite things. A tanning bed emits ultraviolet light to darken skin. A red light bed emits red and near infrared light with no UV, and does not tan you.

How long should a session be?

Fifteen minutes in the bed. Longer is not automatically better, because light therapy has a biphasic dose response and added exposure yields no gains beyond the peak.

What should I wear in a red light therapy bed?

Whatever you are comfortable in, or nothing. Light does not pass through clothing, so any skin you cover is skin the session does not reach. You are in a private room, and protective eyewear is provided and should be worn throughout.

Do red light therapy beds really work?

The mechanism is well established. Red and near infrared light is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria and increases cellular ATP production. The strongest evidence sits around skin, collagen and wound healing. Claims beyond that vary in quality, and results depend heavily on the output of the specific equipment and on consistency rather than on single sessions.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Book online. Sessions are in studio only.
